Brand Britain

"Americans: what are their assumptions about people from the United Kingdom? Probably they're informed by Monty Python, rock'n'roll and Victorian England. If you have those things about your character, they'll go, all right, I know what this is."

This isn't from an academic source, but is nonetheless a useful quote to consider (and even use). If you want to know the source, click here.
I find it particularly interesting (and useful!) that this could be a description of the work of Richard Curtis (the preposterous climactic scene in which Bridget Jones rushes out in her night clothes, leaving her flat door handily open, and runs into a charming London vista that could come from a drama set a century before, provides the 3rd strand - though, of course, Merchant Ivory have long traded off the US and global fascination with UK kings, queens and castles).
